The Confraternity of Blessed Imelda

Forming Young Hearts to Love the Eucharist

The Blessed Imelda Confraternity is a Dominican spiritual association inspired by the life and witness of Blessed Imelda Lambertini, patroness of First Communicants. Rooted in Eucharistic devotion and the Dominican tradition, the Confraternity seeks to foster in children and families a deep love for Jesus Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament and to encourage lifelong fidelity to the Catholic faith.

The Confraternity

The Mission

The Confraternity exists to help young people cultivate a living friendship with Jesus Christ through reverence for the Eucharist, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and fidelity to the life of grace. In the spirit of the Dominican tradition, it encourages prayer, sacramental life, catechesis and perseverance in Christian living after First Communion.

The life of Blessed Imelda reminds the Church that holiness is not reserved for adulthood. Children, too, are capable of deep prayer, authentic sacrifice and profound love for God. Her example speaks especially to families seeking to form their children in a culture often distracted from the sacred.

A confraternity is a supernatural fellowship, organized and officially recognized by the Catholic Church, to which men and women commit themselves in order to pursue some good together. The bond of charity that unites members of a confraternity reflects the communion of the Holy Trinity and makes the pursuit of the common good easier and more delightful for the members. Some confraternities stand under the patronage of certain saints, such that their members enjoy a special relationship to their heavenly patrons and consequently are given privileged graces and spiritual benefits through that patron’s intercession.

Membership is ordinarily established through a formal act of enrollment. Parents may request enrollment on behalf of children preparing for or having recently received First Holy Communion. Families, catechists and other faithful devoted to Blessed Imelda may also participate in the spiritual life of the Confraternity.

Members are especially encouraged to celebrate the feast of Blessed Imelda on May 13 through prayer, Mass attendance and acts of Eucharistic devotion.

Members are encouraged to:

  • Attend Mass regularly and foster devotion to the Eucharist
  • Receive Holy Communion reverently and frequently
  • Pray daily, especially with gratitude after Communion
  • Grow in love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary
  • Practice charity, purity of heart and fidelity to the Catholic faith

The Confraternity is not simply a one-time enrollment connected to First Communion, but an invitation to lifelong friendship with Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and deeper participation in the life of the Church.

A Heart on Fire

Blessed Imelda Lambertini was born in Bologna in 1322 into a noble and deeply Catholic family. From an early age, she showed an unusual love for prayer, the poor and especially for Jesus in the Eucharist. She learned to read from the Psalms and delighted in spending time in church, quietly speaking to God.

When she was still very young, Imelda asked to enter the Dominican monastery of Val di Pietra near Bologna. Though only a child, she desired to belong entirely to Christ and to live the life of prayer and contemplation she saw in the Dominican nuns. The sisters accepted her, but because of her age she was not yet permitted to receive Holy Communion according to the custom of the time.

Imelda’s greatest sorrow was being unable to receive the Eucharist. While the community gathered for Mass, she would remain kneeling in prayer, longing for the day she could finally welcome Christ sacramentally into her heart. She spent hours reading about the saints and meditating on heaven, growing steadily in holiness and love of God.

Because of her profound devotion to the Eucharist, Blessed Imelda was eventually named patroness of First Communicants. Her witness continues to inspire children, parents and catechists throughout the world.

Transformative Power of Eucharistic Love

In every age, the Church needs witnesses who remind the world of the beauty and reality of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. Blessed Imelda, though only a child, became such a witness through her innocence, joyful faith and burning desire for God. Her life continues to invite the faithful to rediscover the wonder of Holy Communion and the transforming power of Eucharistic love.
