Ferrara
is near here, about an hour on bus, a medieval town where Savanarola was
born. For those not in the know, Savanarola was a famous (or infamous) dominican
of the late 15th century, a radical theologian who was martyred for his
teaching by the Inquisition. Currently, the Order is forwarding his cause
for sainthood.
While in Ferrara,
the chapter members celebrated the eucharist with the archbishop of Ferrara/Comacchio,
S. Ecc. Rev. Ma Mons. Carlo Cafarra (at Timothy's right), another auspicious
occasion typical of the goings on here.
Afterwards,
we went to dinner at a wonderful restaurant out in the countryside and then
for a stroll around the Church of Pomposa, a former Benedictine monastery
from about the 6th century, now mostly gone except for the church. We topped
the day off with a short stroll around Comacchio (ko-MA-kee-o), a small
little fishing village with many canals and bridges.
