1.2 - Services We Can Offer Dominican Entities

Due to the generosity of several dominican individuals and provinces, we can offer some internet services to any dominican group for very reasonable costs. With these services, we intend to ease dominicans into the wealth of resources available on the internet. Eventually, many groups who have started out using these resources will outgrow them and move on to providing these services for themselves. In the meantime, we offer help in getting started.
Email Mailboxes
"Email" is a standard way to send letters over the internet. The "emails" are typically sent for free anywhere in the world in just a few minutes. This is the most popular form of communication over the internet and is already used by MANY dominicans.

Custom Email Addresses
Email addresses are sometimes obscure and sometimes change as a person moves around. We can provide dominicans with a stable email address in the form "your.name@op.org" that will automatically forward the email to whatever service they are currently using, anywhere in the world. It would be like always having a mailing address at Sta. Sabina no matter where in the world you currently resided.

ListServes
Listserves are a way to make it easy for a group of individuals who use email to communicate as a group. It does this by providing a new email address that represents "the group." Whenever anyone in the group sends a message to "the group," each individual in the group gets a copy. We can set up a listserve for a dominican group for free.
For instance, my province has a listserve for its members. Every week one brother sends out a list of brothers who are sick and in need of special prayers. Our brothers out of the country often post messages about how their ministries are going in order to keep in touch with the rest of the province. When someone dies or a crisis happens, often the first word is gotten out through the province listserve. When someone is looking for a particular reference or help with a project, he can post the message here and other brothers can easily respond. People can be members of several different listserves at the same time, supporting the different groups to which they belong.

HomePages and Internet Sites
These are like a series of pamphlets that can contain all sorts of useful information including words, pictures, and sounds. They are what are usually referred to inadvertising references which include phrases such as "Visit us on the World Wide Web at www.something.com."  They are easy to create and we can keep them on one of our servers so that they are available on the world wide web to anyone at any time.

Advice
We also have a number of people available to work with you at whatever technical level you may need to answer your questions about the internet. This could be anything from providing basic information about the internet and how to connect to it, to helping your province think about how it might use this technology to help its mission, to working with you to develop your own Internet Site and training someone to take it over.
