Dominican Sisters of Africa

Decisions from the Coordinators' Meeting
26-30 April 2000, Nairobi, Kenya.

In the course of the meeting we discussed important aspects of our life as DSA, which we want to share with you.

General Assembly of DSA.

This, the second assembly in our history, will take place in 2001. After some reflection we decided that it should be held in a Franco-phone country and thus our first choice is Cameroun. The proposed venue and dates of the meeting are Yaounde, 16 - 20 July 2001.

The theme of the assembly which emerged from our discussion is:
Dominican Women in Africa: Voices of Hope in the Third Millennium.
We trust that through the preparations in the zones and our inter-actions at the General Assembly we will find ways to BE stronger VOICES OF HOPE in response to the needs of Africa.

As soon as the venue and dates of the forthcoming meeting have been confirmed you will receive details with regard to representation, agenda, preparation and practicalities. In the meantime, let us carry all the Dominican Sisters in Africa and their needs and hopes in our prayers.

Conference of the Dominican Family in Manila

We spent a considerable amount of time on the preparation for Manila and we were happy to meet at least with the delegates from East Africa so as to exchange ideas and plan some details.

At the Conference in Manila, continental delegates will have 30 minutes in which to present the reality of their continent. This is a formitable task for us in Africa! In order to assist in the planning for the presentation, we decided that each zone focus on one "feature of the face of Africa". The following themes are suggested for the four zones:

AIDS - East African zone
Violence - Central African zone
Women in Africa - Southern African zone
Religion - West African zone

Each zone is asked to prepare a vibrant presentation, taking into account the whole of Africa. The presentation should highlight some important negative aspects as well as 'the face of Africa hidden in it which refuses to die' and how Dominicans respond to the cry. The presentation may take 5 minutes only. The zone co-ordinators have been asked to work with the delegates and they will be able to give more detailed help.

The delegates are asked to arrive in Manila two days ahead of the Conference so as to have sufficient time for the co-ordination of the presentation and the final preparations of the liturgies. We wish all the delegates from Africa perception, creativity and joy as they prepare for the great Family event.

Financial Structures

As a young DSA we are still struggling with financial self-reliance!

We gratefully acknowledge the donations we received from Dominican Congregations, the Friars in Africa, the Dutch Province of the Friars and DSI. This financial assistance enables DSA to continue to plan for the General Assembly, promote Justice & Peace in Africa and improve communications.

At the same time we felt the need to set up financial structures which will ensure that most of our running costs are met by the members of DSA. However, we will have to continue to seek funding for specific projects. In the near future you will receive information regarding the proposed financial structures for 2001. They will be evaluated at the forthcoming General Assembly and changed, as appropriate.

May all our efforts to promote the goals of DSA bear fruit for us as Dominican Family and for the people of Africa.

Your DSA Co-ordinating Team.
