The Province of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Viet Nam celebrated the priestly ordination of 10 of its brothers on the 6th of August, 2013. Bishop Joseph Dinh Duc Dao, the Auxiliary of Bishop Xuân Lôc laid hands on the brothers at St Dominic's Parish Church.

In Viet Nam, priestly ordinations often draw large crowds of Catholics. They gather from different parts of the country to celebrate with those being ordained. It is also a time of great joy and celebration on the part of the newly ordained with their family and friends, and all those who have supported and encouraged them all along the journey.

In his homily, the Bishop encouraged the priests-to-be to be faithful to Christ, who is the High Priest and who has called them to share in his ministerial priesthood. He also reminded them that they are ordained for service to the people of God, therefore they must remain faithful to their priestly ministry.

According to the Rite of Ordination, the Bishop called each of the brothers and they answered individually to signify that they are freely answering God’s call. The Provincial attested to their readiness and suitability for the priesthood having successfully gone through the formation. Despite this affirmation, the ordaining Bishop prayed, “We rely on the help of God and our savour Jesus Christ…”.

They were examined by the Bishop after which they made a promise of obedience to the authority of the Church and their religious superior. This is indeed the bedrock of the priestly ministry. For the necessary graces to be faithful to the promise and the entire ministry, the ordinands laid prostrate on the floor while the entire congregation called on the heavenly host in the Litany of Saints. With the laying on of hands by the Bishop followed by all the priests present and the Prayer of Consecration, the brothers became priests. To demonstrate this, they were vested with their proper priestly vestment, their hands were anointed for the blessing of the people of God and they were given the instruments (wine and bread) with which they will offer sacrifices as priests. Now as priests, they immediately assumed their new office by concelebrating with the Bishop during the rest of the Mass.

The festivities continued after the Mass with the family and friends of the newly ordained priests. The Prior Provincial, fr Joseph Ngo Si Dinh thanked everyone present at the celebration especially the parents of the newly ordained priests for their sacrifice and all those who have been supporting them.

After all the celebrations, the newly ordained priests are expected to be assigned to different parts of the country to start their ministry. All thanks to God for these wonderful gifts to his Church and the Order. We continue to pray for more vocations to the priesthood.
