“Communication is still problematic” within Inter-Africa, said Brother Cletus Nwabuzo, former Socius of the Master of the Order for Africa and Coordinator of IAOP in his report at the 11th General Assembly of IAOP which was held in Bujumbura from the 15th to 20 2011. Afridoms, the organ of communication of IAOP “needs a larger and more dynamic input from all our entities if it is to communicate anything to us in this age of rapid communication and social media explosion”, he added.

The Coordinating Committee of IAOP (CC-IAOP) took this issue seriously. At the end of its first meeting held from 27-29 December 2011, at the Priory of St Dominic in Kinshasa, General Vicariate of St Pius V, D.R. Congo, the Coordinating Committee came with two decisions in order to improve communication within IAOP. Firstly, to continue to publish Afridoms at least twice a year, but now electronically and no longer in hard copy which is too costly and difficult to distribute. Secondly, since some information can quickly become out-dated, the Coordinating Committee will provide brothers with news snippets through a bulletin called « Afridoms Flash ».

Since February 2012, we lunched « Afridoms Flash », and so far, we have sent more than fifteen Bulletins. Now here is the classical Afridoms in two versions: electronically and hard copy. This edition number 6 (2012) deals with many issues. But the most prominent is the celebration of the Jubilees of the Dominican presence in different part of Africa. The Vicariate General of St Pius V in the Democratic Republic of Congo celebrated its first centenary while the Provincial Vicariate of Rwanda and Burundi as well as Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Vice-Province of St Augustine in West Africa, celebrated their golden jubilee. You will learn more about ordinations, professions and different others activities and events which have been celebrated in our entities.

The new Socius of the Master of Order for Africa and Coordinator of IAOP, Brother Gabriel Samba began his work by canonical visitations. With the Master of the Order, Brother Bruno Cadoré, they had the great pleasure of visiting the Vicariate General of St Pius V, Democratic Republic of Congo from the 13th to 31st January, where they took part in the celebration of the first centenary of the uninterrupted Dominican presence in this country.

Brother Gabriel made also two trips to Africa for fraternal visits. The first took place from the 5th to the 29th of June 2012. It brought him again to the General Vicariate of St. Pius V in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to follow-up on the conclusions of the canonical visitation of January 2012, including on the “Way Forward” (“Feuille de Route”), and to go to the communities of Mbuyi Mayi and Kisangani where they were not able to go during the canonical visitation. He continued this first trip to Brazzaville, Provincial Vicariate of Equatorial Africa and to the Provincial Vicariate of Angola. The second trip took place from 13th of July to the17th of August 2012 and concerned the Vice-Province of St. Augustine of West Africa and the Province of St. Joseph the Worker of Nigeria and Ghana.

Both trips were successful. In general the brothers are doing well. They were happy with the visit which they found comforting and encouraging in their mission. Everywhere the Socius of the Master of Order for Africa and Coordinator of IAOP was warmly and fraternally received. It was a joy to discover the realities of the country or region where the brothers live and work, to be aware of the realities of the life and apostolate of the friars and the Dominican Family, but especially to pray together, to preach and share the communal meal.

The Order is growing in Africa, as evidenced by the many professions and ordinations. Collaboration in formation and mission between entities of Inter-Africa is effective. Afridoms Flash develops and strengthens the bonds between brothers through regular sharing of information, an initiative much appreciated by the brothers.
