The outgoing Secretary General of the Order and Coordinator of the Jubilee, Fr Franklin Buitrago Rojas visited the King’s Own Band Club in Valletta, Malta on Friday, December 16, 2016. Fr Franklin gave his permission to the band club to use the Dominican Jubilee Anthem, “Laudare, Benedicere Praedicare”, during the feast of St. Dominic and during the annual concert which the band held last October.
The King’s Own Band Club, was founded in 1874, when a group of men from Valletta decided to open the band club in order to participate in the annual feast of St. Dominic, celebrated during the first week of August. Ever since then, the King’s Own Band Club has been intrinsically associated with the Parish of Our Lady of Safe Haven and St Dominic and plays a central part in the life of the parish and especially the feast of St Dominic. This year, in fact, the band club’s annual musical programme was held at the parish church and included various Dominican anthems in honour of the 800 years of the Order.
Fr Franklin was welcomed by the Band Club President, Architect Ivan Piccinino, and other committee members and was shown round the main halls of the newly refurbished club premises. There he could see various showcases which house the many trophies the Band has won over the years as well as skull caps presented to the club by visiting prelates. During this visit Fr Franklin was accompanied by the parish priest of the Parish Basilica of Our Lady St. Mary of Safe Heaven and St. Dominic, Fr. Micheal Camilleri, together with Fr. Llewellyn Muscat, the Secretary for Postulation of the Order, who hails from Valletta.
At the end of the visit, Fr Franklin signed the visitor’s book and was presented with the club’s emblem and the latest CD it has recorded.
Norbert Muscat Preca, Committee Member, KOBC, Valletta.
