Election, Profession, the Jubilee and the Sequela Christi

An atmosphere of joy and hope filled the annual assembly of the Friars of the Province of St Joseph’s Vicariateof Eastern Africa as it commenced at St Dominic’s priory (Nairobi) on the eve of Monday, 30 July. Themeeting also served as an elective chapter.
On the morning of Tuesday, 31 July, the brothers celebrated a Mass of the Holy Spirit and then attended a recollection presented by the assembly facilitator and former Socius of the Master for Africa, Fr. Emmanuel Ntakarutimana, OP. His reflection focused on the fraternal implications of the biblical notion of
jubilee as a way to understand better what the LCO speaks of as the sequela Christi. Then, in the afternoon, the solemnly professed Friars met to discuss and to elect the Vicar Provincial and councilors.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, the Friars elected, for the first time, a native of Eastern Africa, Fr. Gideon Kizito Muchira, OP, to serve a four-year term as Vicar Provincial. The brothers also elected four councilors: Frs. Jude Mmassy, OP, Vincent Wiseman, OP, Charles Kato, OP and Dominic Mutuku, OP. The elections were approved the same day by the Prior Provincial of the Eastern Province (USA), Fr. Ken Letoile, OP. The newly elected Vicar Provincial made his profession of faith and took his oath of fidelity to the teaching and discipline of the Catholic Church at the morning Mass on 1 August. He thanked the former Vicar, Fr. Maury Schepers, OP, for his exemplary service, and urged all the Friars to be pro-active in their collaboration with him and the Vicariate council in

order to build up the Vicariate as an authentic model of the sequela Christi.

On the evening of 3 August, the new Vicar Provincial.
together with the Vice Provincial of the Vice Province of Southern Africa, Fr. Stan Muyebe, OP, vested six new novices; four for the Vicariate: Brs. Ignatius Njagi (Kenya), Nicasio Ngondi (Kenya), Jerome Leo (Uganda) and John Mark (Uganda), and two for the Vice Province: Brs. Sphiwe Oscar (South Africa) and Emmanuel- Mary Teboho (South Africa). Wearing the Dominican habit for the first time they commenced their novitiate under the guidance

of the novice master, Fr. John Baptist Ssemugabi, OP. The novitiate is located at St Martin de Porres priory (Kisumu). Then, on the following day, members of the larger Dominican family joined the Friars in celebrating the first profession of three Friars: Brs. Donald Kateguru, OP (Zimbabwe), Lawrence Mwakalukwa, OP (Tanzania) and John Bosco, OP (South Africa).
