The Fr. Val McInnes Chair at the Angelicum University

Fr. Val McInnes, OP

Fr. Val's fifty years of priestly ministry to the Dominican Order was marked by preaching in and around the classroom bringing together people from many different backgrounds. His love of both the truth of the Gospel and the individuals that he was engaging was a beautiful witness to the unifying power of truth and love in service to the Gospel. There is no better place for this chair than at the Angelicum. Today nearly 150 professors teach at the Angelicum, and the university attracts more than 1,400 students from nearly 100 countries. The classroom at the Angelicum visibly captures the mission of the Church and the unifying power of truth.

In his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul writes: There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. The mission of the Church is to unite all nations into one under Christ the head, and one can see this taking place as men and women from dozens of nations are united in their love and understanding of the one faith and life they have in common. Each classroom is a snapshot of the universal church, and those who serve there have the privilege and the honor of training seminarians, religious, and laity from around the world in Catholic theology, philosophy, and canon law. Many of these students will go on to have great influence in the local church in their home countries.

The endowed chair in Fr. Val’s name would go to a Dominican friar outstanding in his capacity for teaching and theological or philosophical research in order to provide material support for further academic excellence at the heart of the Church. The holder of the chair will be required to give an annual lecture to which alumni and hopefully potential benefactors will be invited to attend. We envision the annual lectures that the holder of this chair will give to become the centerpiece of an annual fundraising event for the Angelicum. The chair’s potential for being a source of on-going support for the Angelicum is thus a fitting tribute to a son of St. Dominic whose life’s work was so marked by the two activities of education and fundraising. At present, we have raised nearly 75% of the $1.5 million needed for this chair. For more information about this project or to make a contribution in honor of Fr.
