The Dominican Family in Brazil gathered to celebrate as one family. This was at their Fourth General Assembly held at San Roque in April 26-28, 2013. The Assembly brought together about 73 representatives from all parts of the country; friars from the province, sisters from different congregations including the Dominican Sisters of Santa Rosa de Lima, a new congregation in Brazil, laity from different fraternities, members of Justice and Peace and youths of the Dominican Youth Movement. The Assembly was also blessed with the presence of Bishop Walter Ebejor, OP, bishop emeritus of União da Vitória (PR).

The Assembly was an opportunity to reflect on their common life and mission as Dominicans. The first reflection was on the Jubilee theme for this year; “Mary: Contemplating and Preaching of the Word”. In place of fr Javier Pose, the Socius of the Master for Latin America and the Caribbean who was unable to attend, fr Mariano Foralosso led the reflection and a member of each branch (a nun, laity, sister and brother) spoke about contemplation and preaching from his own specific Dominican life.

The next day, was dedicated to the sharing of experiences of the life and mission of the Order as lived by the different branches, at least in the last five years. Some gave elaborate powerpoint presentations with good documentations and pictures.

Later that night, the participants visited the nuns at the Monastery of Christ the King. The Prior Provincial of the Province of Brazil, fr Edmilson de Oliveira presided over the Eucharistic celebration. After the Mass, there was a social gathering at the courtyard of the monastery where the participants enjoyed meals prepared by the nuns.

On Sunday, the reflection focused on the future; seeking for ways of growing in the common life, strengthening the existing collaborative initiatives and seeking for new and more effective ways of operating, especially the promotion of vocations, formation and the apostolic mission.

Despite the intensive reflections, the entire Assembly was constantly in a festive mood, filled with joy and excitement. It all came to an end with a beautiful spiritual moment initiated by the apostolic sisters.
