joint international conference of the Society for New Testament Studies (SNTS) – Asia-Pacific

Last 28 February to 1 March 2015, the Institute of Preaching hosted the Joint International Conference of the Society for New Testament Studies (SNTS) – Asia-Pacific, and the Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines (CBAP). Around 60 bible scholars and graduate students from various Christian churches and institutions, from the Austria, Australia, China (Hong Kong), India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines gathered to read intensely, to listen intently and to discuss interactively twenty-two (22) scholarly papers representing the broad spectrum of New Testament interests, in the Asia-Pacific context.

The Province was represented by Br. Clarence Marquez, OP, Director of the Institute of Preaching, who co-chaired the Joint Conference organizing committee, and Br. Art Vincent Pangan, OP, student-brother pursuing his STL-MA in Biblical Studies.

In his welcome address, Br. Marquez said:

“In  1  Cor  15:33,  Saint  Paul  once  wrote  “Bad  company  corrupts  good  morals.”  But  the  original  Greek  is  more  telling:

φθείρουσιν ἤθη χρηστὰ ὁµιλίαι κακαί

[phtheirousin  ēthē  chrēsta  homiliai  kakai]

Homiliai kakai.  BAD HOMILIES CORRUPT GOOD MORALS. Homiliai kakai. BAD CONVERSATIONS CORRUPT GOOD MORALS.  And with that biblical advice, reminder, warning, the Institute of Preaching verily seeks to become a venue, not for bad conversations, never for bad homilies, but good ones, homiliai kalai, good homilies, good conversations, good company, like this joint conference of the Society for New Testament Studies and the Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines...

Beyond reading papers, it is listening to persons; more than names and their fames, there is your inestimable presence; during and after this two-day conference, a continuing camaraderie, friendships, fetched at the airport forged in the traffic of Manila, filled in our meals, fulfilled in our midst; a hearty hope, a prayer, a promise, a prophesy… for better days to come, in God’s appointed time.

So, let us begin these homiliai kalai, good conversations, dialogue about the good news, who is really God among us, coming to meet us, in the flesh, in the faces of each one of you here.”

In the course of the conference program, the members of the CBAP elected Br. Marquez, OP, to the Board of Trustees (2015-2017), serving as treasurer of the association.
