Irish Jubilee 800 - in song

Jubilee 800 was celebrated in the Irish province on 28th September with a concert of music co-sponsored by renowned Irish composer Mr Patrick Cassidy.

While the guest of honour was President of Ireland, Doctor Michael D. Higgins, the government of Ireland was also represented by deputy prime minister of Ireland (Tánaiste), Mrs Frances Fitzgerald TD. Auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Dublin, Doctor Éamonn Walsh, a longstanding friend of the Dominicans in the south county Dublin area where the Irish friars have pursued almost 50 years of parish ministry.

Mr Patrick Cassidy's Elegy Suite for 1916 (a reference to a moment in the efforts for Irish independence coinciding with the 7th centenary of the Dominican Order) and The Children of Lir (a musical setting of an ancient Irish myth) were the principal parts of the night's entertainment and were interpreted by Enchiriadis Chamber Choir and the Orchestra of Ireland, directed by Mr David Brophy.

Reverend Doctor Kevin O'Reilly OP, professor at the Dominican University in Rome (the Angelicum), introduced the night's music considering the role which art plays in our appreciation of the transcendent, observing that the future of beauty and the future of Christianity were intimately bound up with each other.

The large attendance at the concert included many friars, sisters, and lay Dominicans.
