Tuesday August 2, the Feast of the Blessed Jane of Aza was celebrated in the Parish Basilica of Our Lady of Safe Haven and St Dominic in Valletta as part of the week long activities in honour of our Holy Father St Dominic which will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2016. The concelebrated Mass was led by the Bishop of Gozo, His Grace Monsignor Mario Grech, a canon law graduate from the Angelicum.

As is customary, a number of men and women from all walks of life were “vested” and made their first promise while other members of the lay confraternity took their three year and perptual promises. The “vestition” is the  public manifestation of weeks of preparation which the new members followed in order to be able to formally join the lay Dominicans who are very active in the Maltese Dominican Province, especially in Valletta. The “vestition” ceremony was performed by Fr Joe Bonnici, the Promoter for the Laity in the Malta Province.

In a thought provoking homily, Bishop Grech reflected on the Gospel reading which was about the request of a man to Jesus to decide on his and his brother’s inheritance. Bishop Grech said that Christ could have decided but he wanted us to be free to deicde for ourselves. That is why he replied “Why should I judge in this matter?” Thus, continued Bishop Grech, we should have a formed and informed conscience to be able to, each one of us, decide what is best freely, each one for himself or herself. He concluded that this is what St Dominic did first by studying and reflecting on the word of God and then preaching it but never forcing anyone to accept the Word against his or her will.
