New Priests and Deacons for the Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana

New Priests and Deacons for the Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana

From among his people, the Lord chooses some to be ministers of the Most High God. It was the joy of such occasion that the Province of St. Joseph the Worker experienced on Saturday, July 16, 2016, when Most Rev. Dr Peter Odetoyinbo, the Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese, ordained 5 priests and 6 deacons for the Province. The ordinations took place at St. Thomas Aquinas priory, Ibadan, Nigeria. The Archbishop of the Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr Gabriel Abegunrin, was also in attendance.

The brothers ordained to the priesthood were: Lawrence Ejembi, OP, Richard Asu-Odok, OP, Clement Oloruntoba, OP, Charles Onwuama, OP, and Patrick Okoye, OP, while the brothers ordained to the diaconate were: Moses Ani, OP, Victor Ogundipe, OP, Elias Otanwa, OP, Francis Ugobor, OP, Francis Chiadi, OP and Peter Onwe, OP. The event, no doubt, drew people from different walks of life.

In his homily, the ordaining Prelate, Bishop Peter Odetoyinbo, who taught the ordinands during their formative years at the Dominican Institute, Ibadan, admonished the deacons-to-be to serve the people just as Christ came to serve and not to be served. And to the priests-to-be to be true ministers of God, offering his mercy and love to all and sundry. Finally, he congratulated the Dominican Order, and the Province, in particular, for the gift of the ordinands, and enjoined the people to pray for their ministers, especially for the ordinands.

In his vote of thanks, the Socius and Vicar to the Provincial, Bro. Martin Aitsebaomo highlighted the fact that the newly ordained were Jubilee Priests and Deacons, because they were ordained in the Jubilee Year of Mercy of the Universal Church, and the 800th Jubilee Anniversary of the Foundation of the Order.

We thank God for the gift of the Priesthood and the Diaconate. May God grant the new priests and deacons the grace of final perseverance. Amen.
