On Saturday, 25 March 2017, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the brothers of the Province of Croatia celebrated their Provincial Day.

The day was an opportunity to focus on the two basic sources of their mission; liturgy and study. They used the opportunity to renew and strengthen their identity so that, with the renewed strength, the brothers can go forth in their preaching mission.

The celebration started with a Study Day at the Convent of the Queen of the Holy Rosary in Zagreb. The theme of the study was, “Liturgy and art”. In the presentation, Dr Ivica Žižić, a priest and professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Split and at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute “San Anselmo”, Rome.

In his presentation, he spoke on the meaning, sources, contemporary orientation and development of liturgical arts. According to him, true liturgical art must originate from the liturgical mystery and its meaning. Its purpose is to inform and to illustrate a historical event and above all, to aid our prayer and worship. Dr Ivica recommended a more intense education of new generation priests in aesthetics, a stronger cooperation among theologians, liturgists, architects, designers of liturgical spaces and objects, and an openness to modern needs and creativity in the updating of the mystery.

Later in the day, the Prior Provincial of the Province of Croatia, fr Slavko Slišković presided at the Eucharistic celebration in communion with the assembled brothers, sisters, members of the Dominican family and friends of the Order. In his homily, he stressed the connection between the feast of the annunciation and our Dominican life and mission. Like the angel, we are all sent to proclaim the good news. At the same time, we are like Mary who was disposed and ready to accept and respond to the Word of God. In this way, we become agents of the Word incarnate, sent to transform the world.

The Provincial thanked the Convent and the parish community for their dedication to the gospel message and mission. He thanked them for their generosity in hosting many activities of the Province. He also thanked the friends of the community who, often quietly, work, pray and help the brothers in their mission of preaching the Word.

The celebration continued with a fraternal refreshment in the convent’s refectory.
