Young Dominican friars from the priories of Mainz and Worms have recently come together as a 'Schola' to produce a CD of Dominican chant. Under the direction of fr Thomas Möller, the Schola sang Vespers of St Dominic in the Dominican church of St Sophia in Hamburg, Germany. Since 1256 the Order has had its own use of the Roman rite (commonly called the Dominican rite), and a distinctive chant. It was not until 1969 that the Order decided to adopt the Roman rite proper, as reformed by the decrees of Vatican II. Nevertheless, the music of the Order remains in use in many priories and represents a part of the Order's tradition, and is still a living liturgical heritage. The CD also includes organ improvisations by Prof. Thierry Mechler, who showcases the living tradition of organ improvisations based on the chant melodies.
