Simple Profession of the Eight Novices in Pakistan

Simple Profession of the Eight Novices in Pakistan

In 1216, St. Dominic De Guzman and his brothers adopted the rules of St. Augustine, which as a canon of Osma Cathedral he had already been keeping and practicing for years. Later on, when St. Dominic established the foundation of the Dominican Order, he consulted Pope Innocent III, he advised Dominic to adopt existing rules since the new rules for religious orders had been forbidden by the Fourth Lateran Council. Thus, the Dominican Order was approved in 1216 and this year 2016, the Order of Preachers celebrates 800 years of existence, service and preaching.

In fact, the year of 2016 has been the blessed year for the entire Dominican Order in the world because this year we are celebrating the 800 years Jubilee of the Dominican existence in the world. We the Dominican friars of the Ibn-e-Mariam Vice Province are so grateful to God because on 23rd of August 2016 our eight Dominican Novices made their simple professions at Holy Rosary Priory, Warispura, Faisalabad.

The Holy Eucharistic Mass was started at 10.30am and presided over by very Rev. Fr. Pascal Paulus OP, the Prior Vice Provincial and the con-celebrants were Fr. James Channan OP, director of Peace Center Lahore and Fr. Younas Shahzad OP, Parish Priest of the Holy Rosary Parish Warispura. The Dominican friars of the Ibn-e-Mariam Vice province, parents and close relatives of all eight novices and religious of the male and female congregations were present at this blessed and joyful occasion. Fr. Pascal Paulus, OP in his homily said that this is very first time in the history of the Ibn-e-Mariam Vice Province of Pakistan that eight Dominican Novices are making their simple profession.

He further said that number eight has a special significance for us as we are celebrating 800 years great Jubilee of the Dominican Order. He mentioned that 8 Pre-Novices are also ready to start their novitiate. We are very grateful to God that he is sending young vocations to the Dominican Order. He appreciated the role of Fr. Naveed Joshua, OP, the Director of Pre-Novitiate House (Louis Hall) Multan, Fr. Patrick Peter, OP, the Novice Master and Fr. Zahid Augustine, OP, the Assistant Novice Master.

By addressing to the Novices brothers, Very Rev. Fr. Pascal Paulus, OP said that this year we are celebrating the year of mercy so you have to ask for God’s mercy for your total commitment, perseverance and dedication so that you could live a full dignified life as a Dominican. After the beautiful and authentic homily eight Novices took their simple vows as Dominicans for the coming three years. It was a time of happiness and joy for all the friars and for the parents and relatives of the newly professed brothers.

After the Holy Eucharistic Mass the eight newly professed brothers were garlanded and were given gifts by the guests and the religious. As Punjabi celebration seems to be uncompleted without Punjabi folk dance therefore there were two drumers who played drums and people danced joyfully. The program ended with the delicious lunch and the cutting of the cake. These newly eight professed brothers will be going to Lahore to reside at Ibn-e-Mariam House Pakara, Lahore and will begin their three years Philosophical Studies at St. Francis Xavier Seminary Lahore. May God Bless the each and every member of the Ibn-e-Mariam Vice Province of Pakistan so that we may continue the mission of our Holy Father St. Dominic Da Guzman with full zeal and zest.

Fr. Shakeel Michael, OP (Secretory, Ibn-e-Mariam Vice Province, Pakistan)
