Sr. Joan

In first considering a call to the contemplative life, I thought of Poor Clares or Carmelites. (I didn't even know there were Dominican nuns!) I'm originally from Canada and after discovering that there were indeed Dominican nuns, I visited a French Dominican monastery in nearby Berthier, Quebec. I liked what I saw, and the sisters directed me to Elmira in New York State since I was English speaking. I was immediately struck by the nuns' joyful and open spirit and sensed I was home.

Over the years I have served the community as librarian and being a lover of reading and books, this was a real joy. Study is an important part of our Dominican contemplative life and it was a source of great satisfaction to me to see that the library was well stocked with the necessary books, tapes, etc. to aid the sisters in their study.

Last year I was appointed novice mistress. This is both a challenge and a privilege...to accompany women in their spiritual journey and try to impart, as best I can, the riches of our Dominican monastic tradition.
I recently celebrated my Silver Jubilee of Religious Profession. It was an occasion to bless and thank God for his faithful love and mercy to me and to rededicate myself to his service and praise
