Sr. Mary of the Trinity

What drew me to the Dominican Monastery in Elmira, New York? I already had a beautiful home, a car, and a business in Oklahoma which was very acclimated to a contemplative life. St. Augustine's words best describe my answer: "You stir us up, O Lord, and make us find joy in praising You, since You have made us for yourself; and our hearts find no rest until they rest in you." God was asking total surrender. That meant surrendering home, possessions, and business and embracing the simple, silent but joyful monastic life of the Dominican community in Elmira.

I had enjoyed complete financial freedom and independence. That total surrender to God included voluntary vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. When a business associate heard I was moving to Elmira and asked what Elmira had that Oklahoma did not have, my answer simply was- " a better offer." Namely, Jesus Christ.

God is never outdone in generosity. His strength and love accompany all aspects of adjustment to our community life of silence, study and liturgical prayer. I do play the organ, klopenspiel and autoharp and crochet items for our gift shop as a recreational hobby. In closing St. Paul's words best describe my feelings now, as a permanent member of the community. "Offer your very selves to God, a living sacrifice, the worship offered by mind and heart." It is my response to God's tremendous love for me and I trust him to be with me every step of the way.
