| Our
founder, St. Dominic, was deeply rooted in the monastic tradition, which was
marked by the continual remembrance of the Word of God. At the same time he
was aware of the critical need for informed preaching in the Church of his time.
In response, he drew together a group of men and women to carry out in a complementary
way the spread of Gospel Truth. In 1206 Dominic established the first Monastery
of his Nuns at Prouille, France. Their rule of life embraced monastic values
but was stamped with a new charism radiating from St. Dominic's own apostolic
spirit. These women served as the nucleus of prayer and penance animating the
preaching mission of the Order as it first spread throughout the world. Today,
in our Dominican Monastery of Mary the Queen, we continue to be part of this
rich and vital tradition as we seek God in all things and above all things.
