Blessed Raymond of Capua, Priest

Born at Capua around the year 1330, Raymond came from the noble De Vineis family. Sent to Bologna for his studies, he entered the Order there around 1350, after “a miraculous opening” had occurred on a Sunday.
He became the 23rd Master of the Order in 1380. Through his devotion to prayer and the example of his evangelical way of life, he vigorously promoted the reform of the Order, encouraged by St. Catherine of Siena, whose prudent spiritual director and biographer he was.
He was an outstanding teacher to her, but she in turn urged him to work in service of the Church and of the Roman Pontiff, who was then residing at Avignon.
He died a holy death at Nuremberg on Oct. 5, 1399, while visiting the convents of Germany. His cult was confirmed by Leo XIII on May 15, 1899. His body was transferred to Naples.
