The overall layout of the PDF files on this site differs from both the original British Burns, Oates, & Washbourne and the American Benzinger editions, although it owes more to Benzinger due to the page dimensions. The typesetting of sentences, paragraphs, and notes should generally agree with both editions. In very few places where the Burns, Oates, & Washbourne and Benzinger editions differ, Burns, Oates, & Washbourne has been followed. The following conscious changes have been made:

The PDF files were generated from an XML source file in the ThML format available at CCEL (registration required). The source file was produced through the kindness of Sandra K. Perry, Perrysburg, Ohio. Many changes have been made to the original file in order to produce these PDF files. Previously, the files had been created from an XML file in the OSIS 1.1 format.

Other differences may be considered either errors, corrections not yet made, or conscious decisions not yet discovered.

Two perl scripts utilizing the Libxml2 XML parser and Libxslt XSLT processor with EXSLT extensions turned the source XML file into all the various kinds of output. The first script generated the webpages from the XML file. All HTML output was run through Tidy to validate and format it nicely. The second script translated the XML file into multiple LaTeX files which were processed by pdflatex.

The documents were typeset using the LaTeX document preparation system, based on the TeX typesetting system developed by Donald Knuth. The teTeX TeX distribution, obtained from the Fink project, was used for the actual typesetting. pdflatex was used to translate the LaTeX source files directly into PDF files. TeXShop was used to test various TeX constructs. The documents were typeset in Times and Wingreek Regular.

BBEdit and TextWrangler were used to edit the perl scripts and the XML files when needed. Other than BBEdit, all of the software used to produce these documents is available for free. The entire process was performed on an Apple iBook running Mac OS X and an old PC rescued from a dumpster running Gentoo Linux.
