The FUndamental constitution

Since our Order is sent to the whole world, in collaboration with the entire Church, it is universal in character.”

Where are Dominican Friars?

A mission to the world, from the beginning

From the beginning, the Order of Preachers was marked by a missionary impulse that could not be confined to one place. In 1217, only a short time after the Order’s confirmation, St. Dominic made the bold decision to send the brethren out across Europe so that the preaching of the Gospel might take root in new cities, cultures and schools. As one early account recalls, “St Dominic, knowing that seed bears fruit when it is scattered but goes bad when it is hoarded, no longer wanted all his brethren to remain in one place. So he called them together and said that he wanted to scatter them all to different places, even though they were still only a very small number.”

That first dispersal became a defining grace of Dominican life. The Order grew by being sent: from Toulouse to Paris, Bologna and beyond, and eventually to every continent, carrying with it the same vocation to preach Jesus Christ for the salvation of souls.

Come and See

Men who are seriously considering the Order are encouraged to contact the vocation promoter in their province, vicariate or region. Through visits, retreats, conversations and periods of accompaniment, they can come to know the Order more deeply and begin to discern whether the Lord is calling them to take the next step.

The Order of Preachers is present throughout the world. In many languages, cultures and countries, Dominican friars continue the mission entrusted to St. Dominic: to preach Jesus Christ, who is Truth and Mercy.
