The Province of Ireland rejoices as fr. Vivian Boland, OP, receives the title of Master of Sacred Theology, a Dominican honor awarded for his contribution to the Order’s intellectual mission.
ROME — Irish theologian fr. Vivian Boland, OP, has been named a Master of Sacred Theology (STM) in recognition of his distinguished service to theology, Dominican formation, and the Church’s mission.
The official decree, issued on 29 May by the Master of the Order, fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, praises fr. Vivian’s lifelong dedication to doctrinal reflection and inquiry, noting that, guided by St. Thomas Aquinas as master and example, his theological work is held in high esteem both within and beyond the Order.
“I am deeply grateful to the Master of the Order and to my province for this recognition and for the honour that accompanies it,” fr. Vivian said of the esteemed honor. “I appreciate that the Order understands the STM not as laurels to sit on but as a call to renewed dedication to the theological service of the Church. Receiving it strengthens my resolve to do just that in whatever span of life our Lord and Master has in mind for me.”
A medieval honor, the STM is the highest academic honor conferred by the Dominican Order upon its members. It is awarded by decree of the Master of the Order, with his council, to friars whose theological scholarship, teaching, and service to the Order’s intellectual mission are judged to be exemplary.
A lifetime of service to the Church
Born in Dublin in 1953, fr. Vivian made profession in the Order of Preachers on 15 September 1972 and was ordained to the priesthood on 2 July 1978. He completed his initial theological studies at the Dominican House of Studies in Tallaght, Dublin, affiliated with the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, receiving the STB in 1978. He later earned the STL from the Angelicum in 1983, with a dissertation on the four cardinal virtues in St. Thomas, and the STD in 1992, with a dissertation entitled Ideas in God According to St Thomas Aquinas: Sources and Synthesis, later published by E.J. Brill.
Over the course of his Dominican life, fr. Vivian has served in Ireland, Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, England, and Rome. He lectured in moral theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Tallaght and taught the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas at the Milltown Institute, Blackfriars Hall in Oxford, St Mary’s University, Strawberry Hill, Blackfriars Hall, Oxford, and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
His work has also been deeply connected with Dominican formation. He served as Regent of Studies of the Irish Dominican Province and moderator of the Dominican House of Studies in Tallaght. In Oxford, he was Master of Students of the English Dominican Province, a lecturer and tutor at Blackfriars Hall, a member of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Oxford, and director of the Aquinas Institute at Blackfriars.
From 2011 to 2020, fr. Vivian served the Order at Santa Sabina in Rome, first as Socius of the Master of the Order for North-West Europe and Canada and Socius delegated for initial formation, then as Vicar of the Master of the Order, and later as Socius for Fraternal Life and Formation. During this period, he also led a global revision of the Ratio Formationis Generalis of the Order of Preachers.
Since 2020, fr. Vivian has lived at San Clemente in Rome. He has served as professor aggregatus at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, director of permanent formation, acting director of the Institute of Spirituality, and has continued pastoral ministry at the Basilica of San Clemente. In 2025 he also began service as a visiting lecturer at the studium of the Irish Province.
Gratitude of the Irish Province
In a tribute marking the recognition, fr. John Harris, OP, Prior Provincial of the Province of Ireland, described the honor as “a fitting tribute to fr. Vivian’s outstanding contribution to theology, to the life and mission of the Province, and to the wider Order of Preachers.” He noted that, over many years, fr. Vivian’s “scholarship, teaching, preaching, leadership, and pastoral service” have enriched students, confreres, the wider Dominican Order, and the faithful throughout the world.
Fr. John also emphasized the theological character of the honor, saying that fr. Vivian’s work has “consistently exemplified the Dominican commitment to the pursuit of truth and the service of the Church through theological reflection.” The Province of Ireland, he said, “rejoices in this well-deserved honour” and gives thanks for fr. Vivian’s “wisdom, generosity, and intellectual leadership.”
