SUMMARY:The Maritains and Rome - Conference
DESCRIPTION:Baptized in Protestantism\, raised in agnosticism\, married to a young woman of the Jewish faith\, Jacques Maritain grew up far from the vital center of the militant Church that is Rome. From the moment of his conversion\, however\, his gaze turned to the Eternal City\, where he made his first trip in 1918. From the beginning of his Christian life\, he was attentive to the teaching of the successors of Peter\, even if some of his theses were discussed in Roman circles. A committed actor in the civil society of his time\, he also held the position of ambassador to the Holy See from 1945 to 1948 and played a role on the cultural level by founding the Centre Saint-Louis de France.\nOn the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Jacques Maritain’s death – a date that has been included in the list of national commemorations of the Institut de France – it seemed appropriate to take advantage of this rich bibliography and the contributions of new archival sources to broaden and deepen the perspectives already opened.\nTwo colloquia are organized in 2023 and 2024. The first\, on May 11 and 12\, 2023\, will focus on the Roman period of the Maritain couple. The subject will be treated from a historical point of view – looking back at the Maritains’ actions in Rome\, Jacques Maritain’s choices as ambassador\, the links the couple forged in the Vatican and in Italy – but also from a philosophical point of view: what was the influence of the Roman period and of the Roman encounters on J. Maritain’s thought? How did the encounter with the Eternal City influence the philosopher’s aesthetic?\nThis opening on the more philosophical aspects of Maritain’s stay in Rome will make the link with the second colloquium. This one\, planned for 2024\, will deal mainly with Maritain’s personalism and its reception: how has Maritain’s thought been received in different geographical areas? How does it allow us to face contemporary challenges? Finally\, there will be a reflection on Maritain’s ecclesiological thought\, so valuable in the synodal context. The contributions of the two colloquia will be gathered in a publication to be published in 2025\, the year that marks the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Centre Saint-Louis de France by J. Maritain.\nConference in French with simultaneous translation in English\nFree admission subject to availability of seats \nProgram in two different locations:\nUniversity of Notre Dame – Via Ostilia\, 15\nPontificia Università San Tommaso d’Aquino – Largo angelicum\, 1 \nLes Maritain et Rome – Program

SUMMARY:Extraordinary Music Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Extraordinary Music Workshop 2022: liturgical music conference with Dominican Friars in Kraków\, Poland\, August 15-21\n7 days. 300 singers and instrumentalists. 13 workshops to choose from. Programs in Polish and in English\, held inside medieval walls that have witnessed 800 years of daily worship.\nThis summer the Dominican Friars of Kraków\, Poland\, are inviting Catholic music lovers from around the world to an international\, week-long conference and workshop of liturgical music in the heart of the ancient capital of Poland\, beautiful Kraków. Here at the Dominican Liturgical Center we believe that sacred music is a vital element of the liturgy\, and we care about both its traditions and setting new directions for its organic development. \nThis annual event called „Extraordinary Music Workshop” gathers typically around 300 participants from Poland. Now\, for the first time ever\, along with the program in Polish we want to offer classes\, talks and liturgies in English. Our president\, Fr. Lukasz Misko OP\, who spent a decade ministering at various parishes and Newman Centers in the United States\, not only had these pieces of simple sacred polyphony – the hallmark of the liturgical renewal spearheaded by Dominican Friars in Poland – translated to English but also learnt the importance of proper liturgical formation\, a process which enables baptized men and women to offer God the right praise and\, as a fruit of that\, allows them to finally „do the world the way the world was meant to be done”. Others have also experienced this unique spirit of solemnity which characterizes our music\, a quality that combines reverence with profound joy. They would often describe this repertoire as simple\, beautiful\, dignified\, and singable. You can watch a few short testimonies here: \n\n\nDr Tim O’Malley\, Theology Professor\, University of Notre Dame\, South Bend\, IN\, U.S.A. \n\n\nJulie Bellefeuille\, PhD student\, University of Notre Dame\, South Bend\, IN\, U.S.A. \n\n\nAndrea Baldazzi\, Catholic young professional\, Bologna\, Italy \n\n\nAleksandra Runde\, visual artist\, Liepaja\, Latvia \n\n\nNow\, it is impossible to talk about beauty and art\, and community\, while we have lived in the shadow of the most cruel war that Europe has seen in decades. Our primary responsibility is always to help those who suffer injustice and in the midst of horror it has been an amazing testimony to the power of human values when we saw millions of people of good will taking extraordinary efforts to support our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. In these dark times we all need ever more light. As Christians\, we believe that there is one true Light that may guide our steps in the ways of peace: Jesus Christ\, living and active in His Church. That is why this summer\, when we seek unity and strength to face our world’s fears\, we invite you to our festival of beauty and community grounded in Christ’s very life.\nRegistration is now open for this August 15-21 event\, and you can find all the details here: www.dlc.foundation/emw. \nThere is yet another reason the celebrate. As it has been exactly 800 years since the first Polish Dominican\, St. Hyacinth\, brought Friars Preachers to Poland\, we want to learn a new zeal for the Gospel from this powerful Apostle of the North. This edition’s theme is „Engendered By Fire” and here you can learn more about the connection between St. Hyacinth\, hyacinth the gemstone\, fire\, and St. Hildegard of Bingen\, an association that inspired this year’s artwork. It is our hope that learning and praying with Gregorian chant\, early and contemporary polyphony\, as well as with Byzantine liturgical music\, will give us a powerful spiritual experience of God’s beauty and will set us on fire for carrying God’s transformative Word everywhere we live. \nWe\, the staff of the Dominican Liturgical Center of Kraków\, would be overjoyed to be your hosts this summer. \nYours in Christ\,\nFr. Lukasz Misko\, OP\, and Staff of Dominican Liturgical Center of Kraków\, Poland

SUMMARY:11th European Assembly of ECLDF
DESCRIPTION:Dear brothers and sisters in St Dominic\, \nI hope this message finds you well and that you keep faith in a peaceful future for Europe\, in spite of all the clouds gathering in the eastern part of our continent. \nPlease find hereby annexed the invitation to the 11th European Assembly of Lay Dominican Fraternities which will take place this year in Vilnius\, Lithuania\, from 12th to 17th August. \nIf you have received this mail\, it is because you have held responsibilities in the service of Dominican fraternities and/or you have taken part in a previous European Assembly and/or you have had contacts with an ECLDF member. The problem is that in spite of all our efforts at ECLDF to keep our database up to date\, changes in the composition of the various provincial or vicarial councils are not always notified to us. This is why I would be very grateful if you could circulate this information as widely as possible so that those in charge in your province or vicariate can receive the relevant information and start preparing for this important meeting for lay Dominican fraternities. \nWith fraternal greetings\, \nOn behalf of ECLDF\,\nLudovic Namurois\nCommunication officer\nassembly2022@ecldf.org \nDownload the convocation in English

SUMMARY:Views from the Pews
DESCRIPTION:Views from the Pews: Towards a Theology of Catholic Experiences of the Liturgy\nFRIDAY 10 JUNE 2022\, 9.30-5.30 PM \nThe liturgy is “the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit” (Sacrosanctum Concilium\, 14). The strong attachment of the People of God to the liturgy has been manifested in a high attendance\, whether in person or online\, during the Covid pandemic. But a less happy sign of this attachment has been division over forms of liturgy. Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis Custodes (2021) concerning celebrations of the pre-Vatican II Roman liturgy\, and subsequent clarifications from the Vatican’s Liturgy Office\, are evidence that\, half a century after the reform of the Roman Rite\, significant differences regarding the Old and New rites remain in the Church\, manifested in often acrimonious debate and polemics. \nBut there are many other voices of “ordinary” Catholics which are often unheard\, yet offer new perspectives – for example on word\, silence and gesture. As a first step towards healing this rift\, this conference seeks to contribute to the 2023 Synod of the Catholic Church through an attentive\, deep and respectful listening to the experience and wisdom of Catholic men and women\, in whom the Holy Spirit dwells and breathes\, in order to discern the common path of reconciliation upon which we are called to embark\, in this next chapter of our shared journey as disciples and companions of Jesus Christ. \nBeginning with a “video mosaic” of Catholics’ experiences of New and Old Rite Masses\, theologians will engage and respond to this experience so as to identify the key liturgical\, ecclesiological and ethical issues that merit further attention and analysis. They will also be invited to suggest and promote resources firstly for understanding people’s actual experiences of the liturgies they attend\, and secondly for overcoming this rift. A recording will be sent to the Synodal Office in Rome. \nTraduction in English.

SUMMARY:Musical Creation by James McMillan
DESCRIPTION:Musical Creation by James McMillan on occasion of the 8th centenary of the Province of England.\n\n\n\nConcert for choir and organ\, with the launch of the CD ‘Consecration’ – Choral works by Sir James MacMillan. + Interview + Reception\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n18 expert voices of the award-winning Scottish professional vocal ensemble\, Cappella Nova\, with Stephen Farr (organ)\, directed by Alan Tavener BEM\, present highlights from their critically acclaimed new recording ‘Consecration’ (Linn Records) of choral works by Sir James MacMillan\, fourth in their recorded series of his extraordinary sacred music. \nCappella Nova celebrates its 40th anniversary with this event which also marks the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order in England and Wales. \nThe Concert\nSet within the glorious neo-Gothic splendours of the Dominican priory church\, Our Lady of the Rosary and St Dominic\, this is one of the finest and most fitting venues for MacMillan’s sacred choral masterworks. \nThe programme will feature The Culham Motets (a cycle of five extended a cappella works for the consecration liturgy of a church)\, plus works for organ and voices including A Special Appeal\, Before the Day Breathes\, and Sing Joyfully. \nPost-Concert Interview with the Composer\nAfter the performance\, the audience will enjoy an interview with the composer\, conducted by Fr Lawrence Lew OP\, and there will be a Q&A with the audience. \nReception\nTickets for a post-concert reception with the composer\, wine\, and an opportunity to have your programme or CD booklet signed\, are also available. \nPress quotes:\n‘It sounds ethereal\, like a mythical tale from days of yore … Alan Tavener presents this music with Cappella Nova not only in his usual tasteful manner\, but also in a gloriously radiant manner.’ – Fono Forum ‘This is an important release and would make an excellent stand-alone introduction to MacMillan’s distinguished and stimulating choral music. Strongly recommended.’ – Gramophone‘This is a terrific disc\, showing contemporary liturgical music at its very best. Alan Tavener and Cappella Nova have already proved themselves to be highly skilled and greatly committed advocates for James MacMillan’s music and once again they serve him exceptionally well.’ – MusicWeb International‘In this fine recording … the Scottish-based choir once more brings a rare beauty and depth of sound to MacMillan’s radiant music.’ – BBC Music Magazine‘Exemplary in every way’ – Choir & Organ

Contemporary polyphony? Add Byzantine choirs and traditional semi-improvised Corsican music\, and imagine making all this joyful noise in the heart of the ancient capital of Poland\, beautiful Kraków. The friars from the Dominican Liturgical Center invite you to an international week-long liturgical music workshop held this August\, 16-22\, at the Kraków priory\, titled Extraordinary Music Workshop. \n“Being aware that music is a vital element of the liturgy\, we care both about its traditions and setting new directions for its organic development”\, says Fr. Łukasz Miśko\, OP\, the Center’s president. He and his team have hosted this iconic event for over a decade now\, gathering well over 300 music lovers each time. This year they decided to run a program in English along with the Polish event\, addressed to international participants. Every day of the conference the attendees will have a chance to pray Liturgy of the Hours and Mass\, hear talks on liturgical theology\, and spend hours learning from masters of chant. Our international faculty includes Dominican friars\, Fr. Lawrence Lew\, OP (London)\, and Fr. Robert Mehlhart\, OP (Munich)\, \na Ukrainian choir director and cantor Andrii Shkriabiuk (Lviv)\, a French singer Jean-Étienne Langianni (Corsica)\, and a Polish composer Paweł Bębenek (Kraków). \nThis year’s edition\, the first ever in English\, has a motto: Song of Hope. “It’s happening in the obvious shadow of the Coronavirus pandemic that has left our world shaken”\, explains Fr. Łukasz. “We all need hope. As Christians\, we believe the strongest source of hope can be found in Jesus Christ\, living and active in His Church. There is something uniquely powerful in the universal experience of singing which\, when coupled with the Church’s liturgy\, allows the body of believers to experience the beauty of Christ’s life even more fully.” You can find all the information regarding this year’s workshop here: https://dlc.foundation/emw \nThis summer\, when Europe is trying to recover from the tragic COVID-19 pandemic\, you are invited to sing the song of hope together with hundreds of music lovers gathered in Krakow for Extraordinary Music Workshop 2021 Edition: The Song of Hope.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:COMMON STUDY PROGRAM 2021 (Online) "MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE"
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nThe Asia Pacific Common Study Program\nEvery year in the Asia Pacific Region\, a Common Study Program (CSP) is organized for young Dominican friars. It is organized by the Socius of the Master for the Asia Pacific in collaboration with the Provincials and Vice Provincials of the Asia Pacific Region. The organizers for the last many years have been Brother Edmund Nantes\, OP\, and Brother Amirtha Raj\, OP\, usually lasting for a month in a predetermined province and place. It is supported by the Provinces\, Vice Provinces and the General Curia. Resource persons are the organizers along with a few experts. \nThe CSP is a bridge program between the initial formation and ongoing formation\, wherein the participants are initiated into the ongoing formation program as they are likewise launched to the ministry. Thus\, the participants include the newly ordained friars\, solemnly professed friars\, or friars sent by the Provincial/Vice-Provincial. \n  \nDuring the program relevant information is shared and the participants are encouraged to know one another by sharing about themselves. They are led to be enlightened with aspects which are important\, relevant and suitable: dialogue with culture\, information about major religions; building inter-lingual\, inter-province interaction; animating and participating in discussions; moderating debates\, etc. All these are carried out with the view to enable the participants to live the Dominican life with conviction and confidence\, as well as to be focused and ready for the mission. By building on the community life\, liturgical life\, religious vows\, regular observance and assiduous study\, the program aims to help\, guide\, and motivate the participants to be a Preacher of Grace. \nThe Asia Pacific CSP for 2021\nWith the theme\, “Make a difference in your Life”\, the Common Study Program for 2021 is via the virtual mode\, and so it is conducted online from 3 July to 10 September 2021\, on Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am (Rome time). Covid-19 is a time of uncertainty and unpredictability\, and so this year’s program likewise intends to discuss and deliberate new ways and means of functioning and carrying on with the ministry: to accept life as a gift\, be joyful as a friar\, and ready to accept the assignation; to function with responsibility; to be a graceful preacher; and to continue on their God-given ministry. \nThere are 37 friar participants for CSP 2021: Province of Vietnam (1); Province of India (7); Vice Province of Pakistan (4); Province of the Assumption in Australia\, New Zealand\, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (4); Our Lady of the Rosary Province (11); Province of the Philippines (6); and Vice Province of the Queen of China in Taiwan (4). \nAmong this year’s resource persons are Brother Gerard Francisco P. Timoner III\, OP (Master of the Order)\, Br. Florentino Bolo\, OP (Socius of the Master for Apostolic Life)\, Br. Pablo Carlos Sicouly\, OP (Socius of the Master for Intellectual Life)\, Br. Mark Padrez\, OP (Socius of the Master for Fraternal Life and Formation)\,  Br. Amirtha Raj\, OP (Socius of the Master for Asia Pacific)\, Br. Benjamin Earl\, OP (Procurator General)\, Br. Michael Deeb\, OP (former Promoter General for Justice and Peace)\, and Br. Edmund Nantes\, OP (former Syndic of the Order). Let us together make a difference![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
