New Provincial Prior of the Province of Hispania

Fr. Francisco Javier Carballo Fernández, OP, has been elected as the new Provincial Prior, succeeding Fr. Jesús Díaz Sariego, OP.

The Provincial Chapter of the Province of Hispania, gathered in Caleruega on August 28, 2025, elected Fr. Francisco Javier Carballo Fernández, OP., as the new Provincial Prior for the next four years. On the same day, he was confirmed in this office by the Master of the Order, Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, through the signature of his Vicar, Fr. Pablo Carlos Sicouly, OP. Fr. Javier accepted the mission on 30 August.

He entered the Order of Preachers in 1984 and made his solemn profession in 1990. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also earned a licentiate in philosophy. He obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Comillas University in Madrid and a degree in ecclesiastical sciences from the Faculty of San Esteban in Salamanca.

He has exercised significant responsibilities in the Order: between 2006 and 2015, he served as Provincial Prior of the Province of Spain and as President of the National Council of the Dominican Family in Spain. From 1998 to 2006, he was prior and pastor of the parish of Santo Cristo del Olivar in Madrid, as well as regional archpriest. Since 2002, he has taught at the Faculty of Theology of San Esteban (Salamanca) and at the Online School of Theology, while serving as director of the theological journal Ciencia Tomista (2004-2006). He has also been President of the Faculty of Theology of San Esteban, director of the prenovitiate, and coordinator of the Chair of the Three Religions at the University of Valencia.

An expert on the work of the philosopher Manuel García Morente and a confessed music enthusiast, he is the author of several books and numerous articles on the philosophy of religion, Christian and Dominican spirituality, and education. Among his works are Religious Experience and Religious PluralismThe God Who Comes, and his most recent publication, Seduced by Wisdom. His life motto may be summed up as: “Live honestly, study, and teach.”We accompany Fr. Javier Carballo with our prayers as he takes up the office of Provincial Prior.
