Meeting of Cooperator Brothers from Europe and Canada

In response to the call of the General Chapter of Biên Hòa, co-operator brothers from Europe and Canada gathered at the Convent of Madonna dell’Arco (Naples) from December 11 to 15, 2023. Deepening their understanding of vocation, mission, and challenges, the meeting featured insights from Brother Alessandro Cortesi, OP, and Brother Vivian Boland, OP. Discussions on the vocation’s various aspects, reflections on St. Martin de Porres, and a firsthand account of combating slavery in Brazil enriched the fraternal encounter. Emphasizing the need to promote the co-operator brother vocation, participants departed with renewed fraternal support to enrich the Order’s preaching mission.

On November 30th 2023, brother Jean-Michel Poffet, OP of the Province of Switzerland was awarded the degree of Master in Sacred Theology. After the provincial of Switzerland, brother Benoît -Dominique de la Sougeole OP had read out the decree of the Master of the Order, Br. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, conferring brother Jean Michel his degree, and the regent of studies of the province of Switzerland, brother Gilles Emmery, had pronounced the laudatio, the newly promoted Scripture scholar pronounced his magisterial lecture.

On November 7, the renewal of the agreement between the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, the Order of Preachers, and the Swiss Bishops’ Conference on collaboration at the Faculty of Theology took place. Signed by the Rector Astrid Epinay, the Master of the Order Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, and Bishop Charles Morerod, OP, the agreement highlights a fruitful collaboration since 1889.

From November 12-13, 2023, the Irish Province brothers at San Clemente in Rome, in collaboration with the Vatican Library, honored the centenary of Dominican Brother Leonard Eugene Boyle’s birth. A Mass, led by the Provincial of Ireland, John Harris, OP, commemorated Boyle’s impactful life in academia and pastoral care. The following day, a colloquium at San Clemente and the Vatican Library delved into Boyle’s life and contributions.

Master of the Order Concludes Canonical Visitation of the Province of Poland

On October 14, 2023, the Master of the Order, Brother Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, concluded the second part of the canonical visitation of the Province of Poland, which began on September 18, 2023. This extensive visit involved meetings with friars, nuns, and members of Dominican lay fraternities in communities throughout the Province. Online meetings were also organized for communities outside Poland, and discussions took place with Bishop Jacek Kiciński in Wrocław. The visit also included preliminary planning for the next General Chapter of the Order, scheduled for July 2025 in Krakow.

The Dominican Family in the United States convened at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC on September 30, 2023. Nearly 5,000 people gathered for talks, prayer, a Rosary procession, and Mass on the eve of “Rosary Sunday,” a Dominican tradition observed on the first Sunday of October. The event marked the first national Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage in the USA, organized by the Province of St. Joseph. The day included spiritual conferences, confession, book presentations, and a beautiful Rosary procession around the Basilica led by over fifty friars.

After the canonical visit to the Vicariate of Angola in August, the Master of the Order, Br Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP together with the Socius for the Iberian Peninsula, Br Miguel Ángel del Río, OP made the canonical visit to the Province of Portugal from September 19 to 23 of this year where they had the opportunity to meet with the friars of the province as well as the different branches of the Dominican family there.

The Dominican nuns share with the great Dominican Family what they experienced during the months of July and August 2023, the period in which they made the canonical Visitation of the monasteries of “Mãe de Deus” in Benguela and in Kuito-Bié, Angola.
