The Pope’s prayer intention for August focuses on evangelization in cities and the need to build welcoming communities amid urban loneliness and isolation.
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has dedicated his prayer intention for August to evangelization in cities, asking Catholics to help build communities “where no one feels invisible.”
Nearly half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, making cities some of the Church’s most important mission territories. Although cities can offer freedom and opportunity, the Pope observes, they can also become “spaces of anonymity and isolation.”
Addressing Christ as the Good Shepherd, Pope Leo prays, “You walk through our streets and squares, enter tall buildings and humble neighborhoods, and silently accompany millions who seek meaning amid noise and haste.”
The pope asks the Lord to give Christians “a renewed gaze” capable of discovering in urban life “fertile ground for proclaiming your Gospel.” Evangelization, he emphasizes, cannot remain only a matter of words. He prays for “a creative and deep faith” that “becomes flesh through simple and loving gestures.”
Urban loneliness can be experienced through superficial relationships, a lack of connection with neighbors, limited emotional support and the feeling of not belonging anywhere. In response, the pope asks that the Church become a community that “goes forth,” able “to reach out to the peripheries, to console those who are lonely, and to sow fraternity and connection instead of giving in to indifference.”
The Holy Father’s intention also invites the Order of Preachers to deepen its mission of making the Gospel present in the often-overlooked places of daily life. Dominicans are called to preach not only from pulpits and classrooms, but also through a life of encounter that allows those who pass unnoticed to be seen, welcomed and loved.
“Lord, may our urban communities be open and welcoming homes,” Pope Leo prays, “places where hope is shared, where no one feels invisible, and where the joy of your Gospel shines in the hidden lives of so many brothers and sisters.”
Through its monthly “Pray with the Pope” campaign, the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network invites Catholics and all people of goodwill to join the Holy Father in praying for the most urgent challenges confronting humanity and the Church’s mission.
For August, Pope Leo asks Christians to become “bold and creative missionaries” whose lives proclaim a divine love capable of overcoming “haste, noise and anonymity.”
