The presentation of credentials
Vietnam, 7 July 2019.
The Dominican friars have been meeting since yesterday in Biên Hoà (Vietnam) to celebrate the General Elective Chapter no. 290 (which will take place from July 7 to August 4).
On July 7, the preliminary process began with the presentation of credentials. This document certifies the valid participation of each capitular and of those invited to the General Chapter.
From various countries of the world the friars and guests came to this warm city, especially because of the joy and the welcome of the friars in Vietnam.
Holding an elective General Chapter is of great importance for the life, mission and history of the Order and the Church; on this occasion, it will be the second Chapter held in Asia, the first took place in Quezon City (Philippines) in 1977 (No. 276) but, in turn, it is the first General Chapter held in a country in which Catholics are a minority.
The friars participating with an active voice are the provincial priors, definitors and delegates of the respective provinces. Each of them was elected according to the norms established in the Book of Constitutions and Ordinations of the Order (LCO).
Also attending as guests by the Master of the Order are some Partners, General Promoters and representatives of the various branches of the Dominican Family (nuns, sisters of apostolic life, lay fraternities, secular institutes, Dominican priestly fraternities, Dominican youth movement, cooperator brother).
Among capitulars, guests, translators and interpreters and logistics teams, a total of 160 participants make up the living testimony of the Dominican Family in this General Chapter of Biên Hòa 2019.
The work of commissions and plenary sessions will be carried out with simultaneous translation into the official languages of the Order at present: Spanish, French and English.
In its more than 800 years, the Order of Preachers celebrates General Chapter No. 290, counting from the first General Chapter held in Bologna in 1221. Chapters are held every 3 years. This General Chapter will elect the Master of the Order of Preachers who will be the 88th successor of Saint Dominic. The new Master of the Order will assume his office for 9 years, from 2019 to 2028.
