Blessed Mannes, Priest, Brother of Our Holy Father Dominic
Optional Memorial

Born around the year 1170 at Caleruega, Mannes was the full brother of Our Holy Father Dominic and his collaborator in the spread of the Order. He was “a contemplative and holy man,” “gentle, humble, joyful and merciful,” and also “an ardent preacher.”

Together with other brothers, he founded the convent of Saint Jacques in Paris in 1217. Then, at Dominic’s command, beginning in 1219, he devoted himself zealously to the direction of the nuns, guiding them with prudent spiritual moderation and the example of his virtues, while “living long for God in prayer.”

He died at the monastery of St. Peter of Gumiel de Izán around 1235. Gregory XVI confirmed his cult on June 2, 1834.
