The Dominican presence in Hungary began in 1221, and the Dominican Laity continues to be a vital part of this deep history. On May 30 – June 2, the Lay Fraternities of the Vicariate of Hungary hosted a national gathering of its members in Budapest with the General Promoter of the Laity, fr. Cristóbal Torres Iglesias, OP.
Participants arrived in Budapest from fraternities throughout the country, including Mrs. Hilda Merkl, OP; Mrs. Nikolett Murányi; OP, Mr. Istvan Murányi, OP; fr. Jean-Yves Brachet, OP; fr. Szabó Bertalan, OP; and representatives of various fraternities across Hungary.
Two particularly significant highlights included a visit to the site of the ruins of the first Dominican convent in the old city of Buda, and a Eucharistic celebration held at St. Jude Thaddeus Church in Sopron, presided by the General Promoter for the Laity. Other notable moments included an open discussion session for fraternity members with the General Promoter, and a celebratory luncheon held at the old refectory of the historic St. Jude Thaddeus Convent.
