Dominican Brothers: ‘Preachers of Grace’ for a wounded world

Religious Brothers Day on May 1 invites prayer for the vocation and witness of Dominican cooperator brothers

On the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, May 1, the Religious Brothers Conference observes Religious Brothers Day. The day is a moment to give thanks for the lives of men who have consecrated themselves wholly to Christ as brothers and to pray that others may hear and answer that same call.

For the Dominican Order worldwide, the day offers an occasion not only to honor the vocation of Dominican Cooperator Brothers, but also to reflect on a witness that remains urgently needed in the life of the Church.

In a message prepared for this year’s observance, the Permanent Commission for the Promotion of the Vocation of Dominican Cooperator Brothers invites the Order to pray for an increase of vocations, for brothers who live and minister among us, for those who have gone before us in faith, and for a Church that continues to foster this often-overlooked vocation.

The vision is simple but profound. In a world marked by loneliness, division, and wounded human dignity, the vocation of the brother stands as a sign that another way of living is possible: a life rooted in fraternity, prayer, common mission, and the proclamation of the Gospel.

Dominican Cooperator Brothers are men “consecrated to the Word,” sent to proclaim Christ wherever his face is dimmed or not yet known. That mission belongs to the whole Order of Preachers, but the witness of the brother has a particular clarity. His life reminds the Order (and the Church) that preaching extends beyond the pulpit. It begins in the chapel, in community life, in study, and is poured out in the daily offering of one’s life for others.

For this reason, the brother’s vocation is not defined simply by what he does, but by who he is: a religious man, professed in the Order, living the evangelical counsels and sharing fully in the common Dominican vocation. The Cooperator Brother’s witness is not secondary. It is essential.

This year’s reflection draws on the 2015 Vatican document Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church, which presents the vocation of the brother as part of God’s response to a world wounded by the absence of brotherhood. At the root of this calling is a deep solidarity with the suffering of others: a willingness to see, hear, and respond with the heart of God.

The message also emphasizes fraternity as one of the brother’s most distinctive gifts. The Acts of the General Chapter of Bien Hoa (2019), recall that the cooperator brother is “a prophetic witness to essential aspects of our common vocation as friar preachers.” In particular, he makes visible the fraternal character of Dominican life and reminds the brethren that their life together is itself a form of preaching.

That witness is especially important in a culture that prizes status, efficiency, and individual achievement. The life of a brother quietly proclaims something different: that to belong to Christ is to belong to one another, and that the Gospel becomes credible when it is lived in common.

On this Religious Brothers Day, the Dominican Family gives thanks for those brothers whose lives make the mercy of Christ visible in countless ways. Their witness remains a quiet prophecy for a wounded world and a reminder that the Church still needs men willing to be brothers, to preach, and to bring healing and hope where it is most needed.
