The book recalls the great figure of Saint Dominic and the historical, ecclesiastical, and cultural significance of his work.
As a result of the historical reflection on the figure of St. Dominic of Caleruega on the occasion of the eighth centenary of his death in Bologna on August 6th, 1221, which was commemorated in 2021 with the conference “Domenico e Bologna. Genesi e sviluppo dell’Ordine dei Predicatori” (Dominic and Bologna. Origin and Development of the Order of Preachers), the book Domenico di Caleruega, il suo Ordine e la sua memoria da Bologna all’Occidente (Dominic of Caleruega, His Order, and His Memory from Bologna to the West), edited by Friar Viliam Štefan Dóci, OP, and Professor Riccardo Parmeggiani, with the collaboration of Fabio Simonelli, was recently published.
The book, published by Viella Press as volume 43 of the Dissertationes Historicae collection of the Historical Institute of the Order of Preachers, is a five-part work containing twenty articles by historians and art historians, in Italian, French and English, on the figure of the Saint and his religious family from different perspectives. Part one is dedicated to Dominic as preacher and founder of the Order, and to his relations with the Popes and the Roman Curia. Part two explores Dominic’s context in Bologna, examining the first General Chapter of the Preachers in 1220, the figure of Reinald of Orleans, and the university. Part three focuses on the development of the Order along the Bologna-Paris axis in the first decades after Dominic, and illustrates some characteristic aspects of the young Order through the examples of Jordan of Saxony, Diana of Andalò, Roland of Cremona, and Hugo de Sancto Caro. Part four is dedicated to the intellectual profile of the Order, examining the institution of the first Dominican general studies in the 13th century, with particular attention to the development of the Bolognese conventual school. The fifth and final part is devoted to the memory of St. Dominic as cultivated through writing and art.
