Cardinals Vesco and Radcliffe Received Congratulations at the Angelicum and General Curia

After the Ordinary Public Consistory on December 7th, 2024, during which they received the cardinal purple from Pope Francis, the new Cardinals Jean-Paul Vesco, OP, Archbishop of Algiers (Algeria), and Timothy Radcliffe, OP, received the embrace of the Dominican Family in Rome, at the Angelicum and at the General Curia.

The day after the Consistory, on Sunday, December 8th, the Angelicum hosted a celebratory reception for the new cardinals. After the welcome address and prayer by the Rector, Fr. Thomas Joseph White, OP, the Master of the Order, Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, said a few words, in which he recalled Blessed Martyr Fr. Pierre Claverie, OP, who was Bishop of the Diocese of Oran in Algeria: “He was a very good friend of Timothy. I was a student brother when I first heard about him through Timothy’s letters and talks. Later, Pierre Claverie’s successor in the Diocese of Oran, the first to arrive there, was our brother, His Eminence Jean-Paul Vesco, and I believe their stories intersect at that point with that of our brother.” Also recalling the martyr companions of Oran, who were beatified together with him, he highlighted their eloquent testimony: “Their voices were silenced by martyrdom. And that is the color that our brothers wear today. As the Pope said, let us pray for the Pope’s collaborators.”On Monday, December 9th, a moment of celebration dedicated to Cardinal Radcliffe took place at the convent of Santa Sabina, the General Curia of the Order, with the participation of some of his family members and three brothers who were Officers of the Curia when he was Master of the Order (1992-2001): Brother Daniel Ulloa, OP, and Brother Thomas McCarthy, OP, who served as Secretaries General of the Order, and Brother Kevin Toomey, OP, who was Socius for Asia and the Pacific.
