The World as Cloister: The Audacity of the Dominican Mission

The World as Cloister: The Audacity of the Dominican Mission

With the recent election of Pope Leo XIV and the upcoming General Chapter of our Order in Krakow next July, now is an opportune time to reflect on the life and legacy of our founder, St. Dominic, and the mission he entrusted to us as the Order of Preachers. Above all, Saint Dominic was a man of the Church. A…

Hope against exhaustion

Hope against exhaustion

Current impressions from Ukraine Burdening fatigue Two boys sit in the front row at Mass. Both are utterly exhausted—barely able to stand, grateful for any moment to sit. One of them, around 13 years old, keeps his hand gently on the shoulder of the younger one, about 8. Though fatigue makes it hard to keep his arm raised, he never…

Becoming a Dominican saint behind prison walls

Becoming a Dominican saint behind prison walls

‘It would be a big sin, not to be here’, with this humorous sentence the Master of the Order, Brother Gerard Francisco Timoner, OP, welcomed the lay fraternity in Norfolk, Massachusetts – and caused a few laughs. The visit of the Master of the Order in June 2025 took place as part of the visitation of the Eastern Province of the USA and the location of the meeting was an unusual one: behind prison walls. The Dominican joy that pervaded the meeting, however, made all walls forgotten. No Master of the Order since Fr Timothy Radcliffe has missed the opportunity to come here – and the gratitude for this is palpable in the room.

Book Review A new book written by a Dominican priest, who has ministered to the Deaf communities of South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho for nearly 20 years, is a thoughtful and rich exploration of the intersection between history philosophy and heroism. More than that, however, Proud to be Deaf: Ministry, Saintliness and the History of the Catholic Deaf Community in…

Loss becomes gain, death becomes life

Loss becomes gain, death becomes life

The following homily was preached by the Master of the Order, Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, during a fraternal visit to the Monastery of Santa Maria della Neve. Perhaps some of you have wondered why today, in this splendid monastery, there are so many friars. It is certainly one of the rare occasions when Dominican friars outnumber the nuns in…

Dominican Order welcomes Pope Leo’s first major document

ROME — Pope Leo XIV has released his first apostolic exhortation, “Dilexi te” (“I have loved you”), a call to place the poor at the center of the Church’s life and mission. Signed on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the text insists that faith and love for the poor are inseparable. The Master of the Order of Preachers,…

Letter from the Master of the Order, COVID-19

Rome, 15 March 2020 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? For God will hide me in his shelter in time of trouble,He will conceal me in the cover of his tent. Psalm 27:1,5 Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Dominican Family, As…
