Jorge Alejandro Scampini, OP, a member of the Province of St. Augustine in Argentina and Chile, has been awarded the degree of Master of Sacred Theology by decree of the Master of the Order, Bro Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP. After a thorough review of information provided by his Province and the evaluation of experts regarding his significant academic contributions and dedication to the life of study within the Order, the General Council voted to confer the degree of Magister in Sacra Theologia on Bro Jorge.
Born in 1957 in San Antonio de Areco, Argentina, Jorge Alejandro Scampini initially pursued law studies before entering the Order of Preachers in 1980. He made his solemn profession in 1984 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1987. His academic journey began at the Centre for the Study of Philosophy and Theology at the University of the North, St. Thomas Aquinas. He later earned a Licentiate in Theology at the Angelicum in 1990 and a Doctorate in Theology at the University of Fribourg in 2001. Shortly after completing his licentiate in Rome and returning to his province, he was elected Prior Provincial. Upon completing this role, he resumed his studies to undertake doctoral research.
Following his return to Argentina, Fray Jorge held several significant positions, including Moderator of the Study Centre, Regent of Studies, Promoter of Ongoing Formation, and Conventual Prior of the Buenos Aires convent. He also served as a member of the Commission De Missione Ordinis and, at two different times, was part of the Commission De Promotione Studii.
For over three decades, Fray Jorge has contributed extensively to the academic mission of his province, primarily through his work at the Study Centre, where he is a full professor of Dogmatic Theology. He oversees key theological disciplines, including ecclesiology, sacraments, Marian theology, and ecumenism. He also serves as an Ordinary Professor at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Argentina. Additionally, he has been engaged in teaching courses on ecclesiology and ecumenism in diocesan seminaries and theological institutes affiliated with the Salesians and Franciscans.
Beyond his academic roles, Fray Jorge has held leadership positions in the Argentine Society of Theology, serving as both vice-president and president. His scholarly dedication has centered largely on the field of ecumenism, leading to his participation in various official international dialogue commissions and his role as a consultant to the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity.
