After the election and confirmation by the Master of the Order of Preachers, and his acceptance, Brother André Luis Tavares, OP became the 7th Prior Provincial of the Province of Frei Bartolomeu de Las Casas in Brazil, 28 January 2022.
Brother André Tavares is 40 years old. He is from Jaboticabal, São Paulo. Before joining the Order of Preachers, he was a seminarian at the Diocese of Jaboticabal, where he studied philosophy.
Brother André made his first profession in the Dominican Order on 7 January, 2006. He was a formator for student brothers between 2009 and 2015. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Federal University of São Paulo and the Paris IV University (Sorbonne). He also did a thesis in dogmatic theology at the Catholic Institute in Paris. He works as a professor in the philosophy department at FAJE (Jesuit College of Philosophy and Theology) in Belo Horizonte. He is also National Religious Counselor of the Association of Scouts and Catholic Guides of Brazil (affiliated with the Federation of European Scouting).
The new Prior Provincial was, until his election, Prior of the Convent of Belo Horizonte, as well as Archivist of the Province of Frei Bartolomeu de Las Casas.
