« That is, do thou beware not to love thy neighbour for thine own profit; for that would not be faithful love, and thou wouldst not respond to the love which God bears thee. For as God has loved thee of grace, so He wills that since thou canst not return this love to Him, thou return it to thy neighbour, loving him of grace and not by barter, as I said.

Neither if thou art wronged, nor if thou shouldst see love toward thee, or thy joy or profit lessened, must thou lessen or stint love toward thy neighbour; but love him tenderly, bearing and enduring his faults » (Letter 50, to a mantellata of Saint Dominic called Catarina Di Scetto).

NOVENA PRAYERS WITH SAINT CATHERINE

Novena Friday 21 April

O God, eternal Trinity, you have imprinted in us the memory of every blessing that we receive, the intellect to know you, the will to love you more than anything and to love our neighbour because he is loved by you. You who created us in your image, so that we may be more and more like you, may we be able to respond to the beauty of your project of love for us.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, you who have contemplated with amazement the infinite love of God for the human creature, teach us to look at each person with the very eyes of the Father, he who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

    Amen.

Novena Saturday 22 April

O God, eternal Trinity, you created us for communion with you and it is only in the relationship with you and with our brothers and sisters that we can realise our human nature. Free us from the temptation to withdraw into ourselves and help us to know you and know us in you, as you, God, know and desire us. Through Christ our Lord.

     Our Father.

O Catherine, at the beginning of your spiritual journey, you had learned to know yourself in the light of God and, in this knowledge, you founded all the happiness and dynamism of your life. Teach us not to be discouraged because of our weaknesses and not to boast on our capabilities. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Sunday 23 April

O God, our Creator and our Father, you have formed your creatures for that they collaborate with you to make creation more beautiful and more alive and you gave them various capabilities so that they can as well enjoy the fraternal solidarity, free us from the sadness of selfishness and the withdrawing into ourselves- and make us feel the joy of the help given and received.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, you who have given yourself with humility and a sense of responsibility in the service of the Church and of society, teach us to collaborate generously to the common good. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Monday 24 April

O God, eternal Trinity, you have sent your Son to share our condition by the irrevocable assumption of our human nature: may the Word and the sacraments allow us to experience in the Church its effective presence through time and space.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, you who loved the Church and passionately desired the reform so that it could better fulfil its mission of salvation towards all, to us too, the Christians of today, communicate the ardour of this desire: that it frees us from the sterile criticism and pushes us to feel responsible with our brothers in the mission of the Church and to resolutely employ us to contribute to it. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Tuesday 25 April

O God, eternal Trinity, your Son made man is placed at the service of your project of love and, thus, at the service of all of us, who are wounded by sin and by so many human miseries. Teach us to use our skills and our functions – important or modest - not as instruments of power and domination, but as concrete possibilities to serve and help others.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, you have lived the realities of the Church and society with a humble simplicity, without giving in to the undue conformism but also without claim to originality, fraternally occupying yourself with people in difficulty. Help us carry our own burdens and those of others with serenity, while travelling the path of our life with a joyful confidence. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Wednesday 26 April

O God, eternal Trinity, you have wanted to reconcile man with you by the cross of your Son: may in it, all recognise the sign of your love and find their solution all divisions and all conflicts born between people in the name of religion.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, you who have always endeavoured to announce the « great joy » of God’s love for man, help us to overcome pessimism and to open the road to the Gospel also by our way to consider and judge the events and situations of each day. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Thurday 27 April

God our Father, your Son made man has taught us to dialogue with you with the desire that your will be fulfilled on earth as in heaven, even when we struggle to grant your will and our own: may we feel the joy to be truly your children, trusting that you know and that you want our true good.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, teach us to resolutely seek the accomplishment of God’s will, freed from our terrestrial and docile interests by the voice of the Holy Spirit. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Friday 28 April

O God, eternal Trinity, who found in Mary the open book in which to write your plan of salvation, provide each new generation of the force and freedom necessary to be the leaven which renews society and the Church and make institutions capable of welcoming with confidence the potentialities that young people carry in them.

    Our Father.

O Catherine, teach parents and teachers to assist young people in the search for the meaning of life and to stimulate them by the example to the courage and ardour in their march toward God. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

Novena Saturday 29 April

Holy Spirit, come into my heart; draw it to
Thee by Thy power, O my God, and grant
me charity with filial fear. Preserve me, O
ineffable Love, from every evil thought;
warm me, inflame me with Thy dear love,
and every pain will seem light to me. My
Father, my sweet Lord, help me in all my
Actions. Jesus, love, Jesus, love. Amen.

(Saint Catherine of Siena, prayer XXV)

    Our Father.

O Catherine, who have conformed to the will of God and his desire of salvation for the world, teach us the beauty of a serious and constant love, drawn from the strength of the Holy Spirit and cultivated with care in the small gestures of each day. Through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.
