Fr. Robert Mehlhart, OP appointed President of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music

Fr. Robert Mehlhart, OP

On 18 July 2023, the Cardinal Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music (PIMS) – José Tolentino de Mendonça – appointed Fr. Robert Mehlhart, OP, brother of the Province of St Albert the Great in Southern Germany and Austria, as President of the PIMS.

Fr. Robert was born in Trostberg, Bavaria in 1982. He made his first profession in 2004 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2010. He studied Theology, Music and Musicology at the Universities of Vienna and Oxford. At the Faculty of Musicology of the University of Vienna, he obtained his doctorate in the field of Gregorian chant.

Since 2012, he has been choirmaster and organist of the St Cajetan Church in Munich. Since 2018 he has been a lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He is currently also Prior of the Dominican Convent in Munich.

Fr. Robert will take up his duties as President of the PIMS on 1 October, the start of the new academic year.
