The Dominican friars of the Province of San Luis Bertrán in Colombia elected br. Franklin Buitrago Rojas, OP, as their Prior Provincial on November 5, 2022. The Master of the Order, fr Gerard Francisco Timoner III, OP, confirmed the election and fr Franklin accepted his mandate the following day.
Br. Franklin was born on 22 July 1980 in the city of Bogotá. He received the habit on 26 July 1997. He made his solemn profession on 9 July 2002 and was ordained a priest on 9 April 2005.
He holds a degree in philosophy from the University of Santo Tomás and a canonical bachelor’s degree in theology from the Pontifical Bolivarian University. He holds a master’s degree in philosophy from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, a master’s degree in theology from the Dominican College in Ottawa (Canada) and a doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).
He teaches philosophy and theology at the Universidad Santo Tomás, at the Facultad San Esteban Salamanca in Spain and at the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Bogotá.
Throughout his ministry in the Order, he has been secretary to the Prior Provincial, chaplain of the University Pastoral Centre of the University of Montreal, vicar of the parish of Saint-Arsène and chaplain of the Spanish-speaking mission of Montreal. He is a scholar of the Sedes Sapientiae Foundation of the University of Leuven in Belgium, Secretary General of the Order, international coordinator of the 800th anniversary celebration of the Order and Dean of the Division of Philosophy and Theology at the University of St. Thomas. Since 2019, he has served as Master of Students and Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of St. Thomas.
He was a member of the Board of Founders of the University of St. Thomas for two terms and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum) and of the Theological Commission of the Order of Preachers.
